Incremental Encoders are less expensive but are not independently able to determine their angular position upon power up or power interruption. Data is sent to a processor in the form of pulses that must be decoded into meaningful position information. Incremental encoders are the most common type of rotary encoder.
Absolute Encoders are more expensive but instantly know their angular position. The data sent completely describes its angular position and is sent as position word in a number of different formats. Absolute encoders are used where instant position information is required and when position errors are not to be tolerated. This includes systems that have restricted azimuth or elevation rotation.
