Semi-hollow shaft encoders are similar to hollow shaft encoders mounting in the same way. However the encoder’s shaft bore only extends partially through the encoder. As they only have a bore at one end, their ingress susceptibility could be considered as reduced by a factor of 50% in some cases.

Solid shaft encoders are a more conventional encoder requiring a flexible shaft coupling to link the encoder shaft to the actual shaft that drives the encoder. Because a solid shaft encoder only has a small shaft, rather than a bore, the moving parts including the bearings and seals have a much reduced surface area.
